PG Diploma in Social Work/CQSW

Graduated: 1989

I have finally managed to look out a photo from when I was a student on the PG Diploma in Social Work/CQSW programme at Edinburgh (1987-89) (see below- I'm the one on the right). I did a placement with the Naval Family Service in Rosyth, which gave me opportunities to visit a submarine, have a helicopter ride and lunch on a ship as well as learning about social work with naval personnel.

I really appreciated having three practice learning opportunities as we did then. I went to Smith's Place (precursor of Multi-Cultural Family Base - MCFB), the Naval Family Service & Victoria Street Social Work Centre. Bill Whyte was my tutor & John Triseliotis was Head of Programme. The course gave me a good foundation and I went on to work in statutory social work in Edinburgh (generic followed by Community Care at Victoria St and Murrayburn Gate).

I became a practice teacher in 1999 and worked with students both as a singleton and later as a dedicated practice teacher for City of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Voluntary Organisations' Council (EVOC) and Midlothian. I later became a Learning & Development Team manager (job-share with Marianne Hughes) and have taught on qualifying and post-qualifying programmes at the University of Stirling since 2006.
