Ralph came to the university as a lecturer on a part-time basis in 1970, initially teaching on the childcare PG course. (He had earlier completed the PG Childcare course at Edinburgh.) He continued to work as a childcare officer at the Children's Department, City of Edinburgh Council, where he had worked since 1965, following the developments that had accompanied the Children and Young People's Act of 1963.
Ralph worked at the university until 1999, and in this time, became a Senior Lecturer and latterly, Head of the Social Work Section. He also engaged in research and writing for publication, most often with colleagues including Susan Hunter and Viv Cree.
