The Association of Psychiatric Social Workers (APSW) was formed in 1929 as an independent association, after a training course in mental health was established at the London School of Economics and Political Science. It created a professional register in 1961.  It merged with 6 other professional organisations to become the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) in 1970. Its training functions were taken on by CCETSW on its formation in 1971.
