CCETSW launched pilot courses for a modular training scheme leading to the award of the Certificate in Social Service (CSS). The CSS was introduced 'to provide educational and training opportunities for staff in day, domiciliary, community, field and residential settings'. These courses were employer led and delivered; students remained in their current jobs and attended college on a day-release basis, supported by a study supervisor who helped them to integrate their work and college based learning. Students completed a Common Unit focused on the conext of social services and then a specialist Standard Unit. Employers thus had far greater input in what and how they learned.
