In 1999, The University of Edinburgh launched a new four-year, Honours degree in Social Work for the first time, thus anticipating the professional requirement for an Honours degree that came into place a few years later across the UK. It replaced the three year BA (Ordinary) degree that Edinburgh had inherited following the merger with Moray House Institute of Education in 1998. The BA closed in 2000.
