Social work education began at New College Durham with offering the Certificate in Social Service (CSS) course in 1979.
This developed into the DipSW in 1990/91 and since 2002, the BA Hons in Social Work. What is distinct about this programme is that it is in a higher education department within a Further Education (FE) College, therefore has a very strong widening participation agenda.
New College is within the North East Teaching partnership, which is the biggest partnership in England. The criteria set by the Department for Education for such teaching partnerships specifies an entry requirement of 300/120 UCAS points. This is a high tariff, which has an impact on the widening participation agenda. As a result, it can feel as if we are pulled in two directions in this.
