The University of Edinburgh was originally known as the College of Edinburgh or the 'Toun's College'. It was founded in 1583 by the Town Council of Edinburgh, under general powers granted by the Charter of King James VI. The University remained under the control and patronage of the Town Council until 1858 when, by the Universities' Act, all the universities of Scotland received new and autonomous constitutions.
