Jean Robertson was a Scot who had trained University of Glasgow (MA Dip Social Science) and worked at the university settlement in Anderston before emigrating to work in munitions factories in Australia during World War 2. She was appointed Director of Field Work at Melbourne University in 1938, then went on to the University of Wellington's School of Social Science in 1949. She went on to found the social work course at the National University of Singapore (then University of Malaya) in 1952, and worked there for 15 years training social workers from all over the Far East before becoming the first chair of social work at the University of Hong Kong.
