Dr Jackie Gulland's book "Gender, work and social control: a century of disability benefits" has now been published

Lecturer in social work, Dr Jackie Gulland, is delighted that her book Gender, work and social control: a century of disability benefits has now been published by Palgrave Macmillan in its prestigious socio-legal studies series. This book arose from a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship in Social Policy at the University of Edinburgh and has been developed during Dr Gulland’s time as a lecturer in social work. In collaboration with colleagues from the Universities of Stirling, Central Lancashire, Northampton and East London, Professor John Devaney has been awarded a major grant by the Economic and Social Research Council for a four-year project investigating innovative interventions to support children and young people impacted by domestic abuse. This year the theme of international World Social Work Day was “relationships.” Professor John Devaney delivered a keynote presentation at the main UK event in London on Tuesday 19th March 2019, and the following evening the School hosted a talk by John Buultjens, a world renowned BMX star whose life story has been made into a book, Ride, and a movie of the same name. It’s never too late to study for a Doctorate!

It’s never too late to study for a Doctorate! We were delighted to see Dr Jean Gordon receive her doctorate at the recent winter graduation. Jean studied zoology at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 1976, and then returned to complete a PhD in 2018. In the 40+ intervening years she trained as a social worker in Aberdeen, worked in residential child care, acted as a Mental Health Officer and Practice Educator, tutored in social work law for The Open University and acquired an MSc in Social Research at the University of Stirling.
